Why a GPU with 12GB of VRAM is essential for gaming performance
As the weakest model in AMD’s Radeon RX 6000 line of graphics cards, the Radeon RX 6700 XT comes with more modest specifications, but don’t be fooled by the more modest specifications. The key to good performance with the Radeon RX 6700 XT 1440p gaming card with maximum game settings is that the card comes with 12GB of VRAM, which is more than the amount of video memory delivered on most of Nvidia’s competing RTX 3000 line. .
With 12 GB of GDDR6 memory, AMD claims that its GPU can also handle titles that were a big challenge for last year’s top Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Super graphics card.
“One of the reasons why the RX 6700 XT copes well with modern titles is that we have equipped the RX 6700 XT with 12 GB GDDR6, to work with increased texture loads and higher visual requirements, at higher resolutions and maximum settings,” he told AMD Corporate Vice President Scott Herkelman while presenting the graphics card during a streaming presentation.
This is supported by the not-so-great decision of rival Nvidia to equip its flagship model GeForce RTX 3080 with “scarce” 10 GB of video memory, Herkelman continued to explain his claim that the number of new game titles is already moving the threshold to 10 GB, and part has already passed that threshold. However, although the RTX 3080 has a smaller amount of VRAM compared to AMD’s latest GPU, their video memory is faster with the G6X memory standard compared to the G6 standard on the RX 6700 XT.
“Games like Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War in DX12 Ultra with high texture settings consume approximately 11.1 GB [VRAM], and the Dirt 5 in the DX12 Ultra in high settings consumes 9.5 GB, ”explained Herkelman. “Horizon Zero Dawn in DX12 Ultimate settings, consumes about 10.4 GB and my favorite Red Dead Redemption 2 – Vulcan, Ultra consumes about 9.4 GB.”
Calling the Radeon RX 6700 XT a “must have for 1440p games,” an AMD spokesman said equipping the card with 12GB of video memory will make the cards better for handling today’s top titles and AAA games coming to us in the coming months.
Compared to the competition, AMD’s claims seem true, at least in their frame rate benchmarks for top game titles like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Borderlands 3, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Cyberpunk 2077, Dirt 5, Gears 5 , Hitman 3 and Watch Dogs: Legion.
Compared to rival Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3060 Ti with 8GB of VRAM and the RTX 3070 with 8GB of VRAM, the Radeon RX 6700 XT provided better or at least similar gaming performance at 1440p.
For example, in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, both RTX GPUs delivered speeds in the range of 60 frames per second (fps), while the RX 6700 XT had significantly better 82 fps. In the titles listed, the RX 6700 XT outperformed its GeForce competitors in all but three games.
The RX 6700 XT outperformed the RTX 3060 Ti, but had poorer performance than the RTX 3070 in Cyberpunk 2077 and Gears 5. The company eventually stressed that some of its technologies – such as Smart Access Memory, Fidelity FX and FreeSync – will make their ecosystem highly competitive compared to the competition.
